Chemex

The Chemex is an attractive manual pourover that features a 1-piece glass brewer and carafe. Due to the thick filter paper, the resulting cup is very clean.

Assemble

Place conical filter in top of brewer. Optional: Wet the filter and prewarm brewer by pouring hot water through the filter and brewer for 10 seconds. Discard water, taking care to not dislodge the filter.

Add ground coffee to filter

Brew

Add enough hot water to saturate the grounds. Stir to evenly wet the grounds.

After 30 seconds, continue to slowly pour water over the grounds until all water has been added. Water can be added continuously, or in a few pours. Take care to pour the water evenly over the ground bed and not directly on the sides of the filter. A gentle circular pouring motion works well.

Once all the water has passed through, discard the filter.

Serve coffee directly from the Chemex or transfer to a separate vessel.

Pourover

The pourover method best highlights the complex flavors of coffee and offers the most control over the brewing process. Many different types and brands of pourovers exist.

French press is a simple brew method that uses immersion to easily make several cups of coffee. An all-around great brewing method for novices and experts alike!

Remove plunger from carafe. Optional: Prewarm brewer with hot water for 60 seconds. Discard water.

Add ground coffee to carafe.

Brew

Add hot water to carafe. Stir to evenly wet the grounds.

After 4 minutes, insert plunger into top of carafe and slowly press it down to the bottom.

Serve coffee immediately or transfer to separate vessel. Brewed coffee will continue to extract and become bitter if left in the french press with the grounds.

AeroPress

The AeroPress uses immersion and pressure to make a small quantity of semi-concentrated coffee with low acidity. Coffee can be diluted to taste.

Prepare

Coffee: 15 g | 1 rounded aeropress scoop | fine grind
Water: 225 g | to “4” mark | 200º F - 205º F, more for preheating and rinsing.
Equipment: Aeropress (brewer + plunger + scoop) | filter | coffee cup | spoon
Total Brew Time: 90 seconds

Assemble

Place filter in cap. Rinse the filter with hot water. Optional: Prewarm brewer and coffee mug with hot water for 60 seconds. Discard water.

Twist cap to attach to brewer.

Place brewer on coffee cup so the filter side is resting on the cup.

Add ground coffee to brewer.

Brew

Add hot water to brewer. Stir to evenly wet the grounds.

After 90 seconds, insert the plunger into the top of the brewer.

Push down on plunger with just enough pressure to slowly and steadily depress the plunger. Stop when you hear air hissing. Do not compress the grounds.

Remove AeroPress from mug.Serve coffee or transfer to a separate vessel.

Moka pot

Moka pots use pressure to push hot water from the bottom chamber through the coffee grounds for an espresso-like coffee.

Water: 625 g | to fill line | preheated to boiling

Assemble

Add preheated water to bottom compartment.

Place basket in bottom compartment. Add coffee to basket. Do not tamp or compress coffee.

Screw top and bottom together firmly.

Brew

Place moka pot on stovetop on medium to medium-high heat. Leave top open.

At approx 90 seconds, coffee will begin to stream out of the top.

When the coffee exiting the spout is a blonde color, remove moka pot from heat.

Serve coffee immediately or transfer to separate vessel. Coffee left in moka pot can “cook”, resulting in bitter or plastic-tasting coffee.
